Post your paragraph comparing these two important leaders here.

  1. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle are thought to be two of the greatest military leaders during the time of World War II. Growing up, they were extremely similar. Both of their fathers fought in wars which inspired both of them to pursue the military in school and in the years following. They were both considered to be mediocre students but their performance on the battlefield was a whole other story. They were fantastic leaders that many looked up to. They both ran for office during their lifetime as well, making this yet another similarity. Winston Churchill ran and was elected British Prime Minister in 1940. He served until 1945 and then ran again in 1951. He completed another four years in office before ending his term in 1955. Charles de Gaulle created the French Fifth Republic in 1958 and became the president for ten years beginning in 1959 and ending in 1969. Although they were brilliant politicians, these men were needed more in times of war than in times of peace and prosperity. They both became accustomed to dealing with hardship through war and their extended knowledge on warfare made them excellent people to have during Hitler’s reign of terror. An obvious difference between these two men is that Winston Churchill is English while Charles de Gaulle is French. Winston also trusted and had a good relationship with the Americans while Charles wanted to avoid working with the allies of France. He wanted to work to free France only and not any other nation. Although in some cases these two leaders didn’t see eye to eye, they are both regarded as two of the most power and influential men of their generation.

  2. Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill are know to be significant leaders during World War II. Through their years of childhood, their lives are very alike. de Gaulle and Churchill's fathers both passed away in battle which motivated them to get into the military. Both of their father's were war heroes. When they were both born, they were "poor" students in a military academy. As they grew up "Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle were both elected into office then were out voted because their views and ideas. Both of their views did not fit into a set category of political preferences which caused them to lose votes." As the war came around their country called them back to have them help run the military. In times of peace they weren't needed as much. de Gaulle and Churchill were both prime ministers of their countries and were considered traitors to their countries because of what they did and their ideas. Churchill and de Gaulle became customer to associating with hardship through war and their phenomenal knowledge on military and war made them excellent people to have in the course of Hitler’s reign. These men didn't live the exact same lives. "For instance Charles de Gaulle did not like the United States and wanted to keep them isolated and not involved while Winston Churchill liked the United States." The other huge difference is that Charles Winston is English and de Gaulle is French. Also out of the two men "Winston Churchill was more popular than Charles de Gaulle." Despite the fact that they were different, they were both still known as the two greatest military leaders through the duration of World War II.

  3. Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle were both very important leaders during World War 2. They are both famous for their military skills and how they handled the war. Churchill and De Gaulle both had similar upbringings. Their fathers were both considered war heroes and both Charles and Winston were enrolled in a military academy at a young age. Both later joined the military and were considered very courageous, both ended up escaping enemy prison camps.
Both men served as the prime ministers of their respective countries, Churchill served as prime minister in 1940-5 and 1951-5. De Gaulle also served as the prime minister from 1944-6 and but is more famous for creating France’s fifth republic and being the prime minister from 1959-69. Both men were highly respected by their people but found some trouble getting elected due to their lack of a strong preference of political party. Also both were highly prized and effective in times of war but not so popular in times of peace.
There were some differences between the two. Besides being two different people leading different countries, the two leaders often had disagreements on different topics. De Gaulle did not feel the need to collaborate with other countries as much as Churchill, and both had different thoughts regarding the Americans; Churchill wanted their support and had good relations with them while De Gaulle did not. Even with their differences, both leaders found themselves with common goals and worked together. They are considered among the greatest of military leaders.

  4. Both Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle are considered to be great leaders for their country. This was especially true during World War 2, where Winston Churchill, as prime minister of Britain, was the driving force behind much of the military success and high morale in England, while Charles de Gaulle was the leader of the exiled French government. Both had significant ancestry in military backgrounds. Both were poor students in general schooling, and as such, both enrolled in military schools in France and Britain. They both graduated from military school, and were signed into their respective armies. Additionally, during their careers in the army, both were taken prisoner in enemy camps. Churchill managed to escape his, in South Africa during the Boer War, while de Gaulle tried five separate times to escape. After the end of World War 2, both were chosen to lead their respective countries, although neither of them was as successful as they had been the first time. Churchill died 4 years prior to de Gaulle, in 1945.

It’s actually somewhat supernatural that these two leaders were so similar. This must say something about the types of people that citizens choose to lead them in times of hardship and conflict, like the period during and around World War 2.

  5. Though Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle left very different legacies, they both had a similar character and background. Both Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle were considered 'poor to average' students in school and depended on their cult of personality to carry them to a leadership position. Specifically, Winston Churchill came from a wealthy family and was 'privileged but unhappy'. It took Churchill 3 tries to pass the exam in order to get into Britain's military academy. Charles de Gaulle was very similar in that his teachers considered him average in just about everything 'besides his height'. They also both came about from ancestors who were considered great war heroes. Later, Churchill and de Gaulle both turned their military careers toward politics and they were both elected by the people but kicked out of office. Churchill for his change in political parties and being considered a traitor and de Gaulle for angered his 'superiors'. Both having military experience, inspired their countries to turn to them during wartime. Churchill and de Gaulle were both more credible and re-elected during WWII.
However, though they had very similar backgrounds their legacies and reputations were different. For instance, de Gaulle angered the UN and did not have a great reputation with the U.S. while Churchill was in good relations with the U.S. unlike de Gaulle however he was considered an enemy to communism in Stalin's Russia. Churchill also left a better impression on the people he ruled while de Gaule lost many of his supporters in his last elections. Churchill was forced to retire from his health. Despite their clear similarities, de Gaule and Churchill struggled to see past each others' differences.

  6. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle were both equally important figures during World War Two. Winston Churchill at the time was the prime minister of England, while Charles de Gaulle was commander of the French army. These two key figures of history led similar lives. While they were young, they both entered military academies and both of them were surprisingly inadequate students. Both Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle participated and had their equal share of blunders during World War One. These two men also saw the importance of the tank in World War One and were some of the few that exaggerated it’s relevance during war. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle were both very headstrong and had “violent” views upon war which eventually lost them political support. However, once World War Two was on the doorstep of Europe, both Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle gained back their public support. Winston Churchill replaced the passive Chamberlain and improved the military tactics of the British. Charles de Gaulle was placed as commander and helped aid in arousing French citizens against the Germans. Charles de Gaulle flew to England right before France was consumed by the Nazi party and from England he hosted a radio station and rallied the French people to resist German oppression. Both of these men helped immensely in the allied victory against the nazi regime.
Although they were very similar up until World War Two, WInston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle separated into very different people. Winston Churchill was loved by his people and resigned from his spot in government due to health complications. Charles de Gaulle on the other hand did gain power in government, but distraught the people he served throughout his career. Charles de Gaulle essentially isolated France from the outside world by injuring old alliances and by working with old enemies. Instead of resigning by his will, Charles de Gaulle left office after losing a vote of support.

  7. During World War II there were two important leaders for Europe their names were Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle. They both knew how to take control of their country. They were great military leaders and knew how to handle Germany. Their fathers had been very important to their countries that they expected the same of their children. They both were great military leaders, because when they were little they entered a military school. They loved the experience from the school that after military school they entered the military. They were very passionate about their country. In fact when they were in the military both were taken as prisoners. The only difference was that Churchill was able to escape the first time, however De Gaulle tried escaping about five times but never did. He was finally released after the war. Both men were prime ministers for their country. Churchill was the prime minister for Britain and De Gaulle was the prime minister for France. They were famous during the war, but not after it. After the war they were not as great leader, because they did not really have to do much and did not show as much passionate. However, De Gaulle was never really liked from his people, but Britain loved Churchill. They may have been a little bit different from each other but overall they were two great similar leaders helping out their countries. They were great leaders for that war. They will always be remembered for their similarities in and greatness as military leaders.

  8. Both Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle are most well known for their predominant roles in World War II and its outcome. Both have been portrayed as fearless leaders that led their country to victory and have more than earned those titles. Of course though, Churchill is better known, seeing as France fell rather early in the war, and Britain held out despite what was thrown at them. And even though these men were allies against the common Nazi enemy, they were not in anyway friends. In fact, they had a very fragile and horrible relationship (similar to Hitler and Stalin's) that was only kept together by mutual dependence. Despite their general uneasiness of the other, the similarities in their lives are almost shocking. While De Gaulle was well-read, and Churchill was not exactly the brightest child, both ended up in military careers. They both were prisoners of war as a result, although while De Gaulle failed to escape five times and Churchill succeeded on his first. They both quickly rose in rank after this and became important figures to their countries. At some point they were also branded traitors, although for completely different reasons. Churchill for switching political parties, and De Gaulle for urging France to revolt during German occupation. In the end, despite their similarities and differences, they were both key contributors to the war who served and protected their countries.

  9. Although Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill had an abundance of similarities in their youth and life leading up to their "reigns", such as their background experience with the army, they each had their own role during the war that they specialized in. For example, Churchill went to a military academy, like de Gaulle, and once graduated, had a hard time becoming a part of Parliament. However, after years of perseverance and determination, Churchill was elected back into Parliament and became prime minister of Britain when Chamberlain resigned. In addition to becoming Prime Minister, he named himself minister of defense as well, which proved to be very handy. Churchill was a great wartime leader, participating in many conferences with the Allies to discuss plans for the war, and really put his "blood, toil tears and sweat" into all of his work while in office. Similarly, de Gaulle faced similar career hardships, but was able to flourish in the war-time environment. De Gaulle could almost be thought of as the 'cheerleader' for the French, advising French civilians to continue to fight the Germans even when their own government had fled to England. De Gaulle did this over a radio broadcast, and was very successful in keeping spirits high throughout the war. Another unfortunate similarity for these two war-time heroes was once the war ended, as they both lost general elections, and both died relatively quickly after their reign. Even though they both were not relevant after World War II, it goes to show how some people, like Churchill and de Gaulle, can only be successful leaders during a time of war.

  10. Churchill mostly became famous due to his defiance against Adolf Hitler. Churchill was in charge of the British army when they declared war on Germany. Later he became the leader of the new government. He called himself the minister of defense. He was very dedicated and was passionate about victory and success. He hoped to bring the United States into the war, but only received their aid. He had many conferences with Roosevelt and Stalin, yet during his absence of one meeting his government was voted out of office. He then turned against Stalin and the Soviet Union, claiming that their power over the Eastern countries was too great.
Like Churchill, De Gaulle joined the army at a young age and developed his passion for France then. De Gaulle and Churchill both share the same dedication and passion to the government/military of their countries. De Gaulle "pushed his views with great vigor and emotion, angering his superiors by attacking them. As a result, his career suffered. However, his strategy was read in Germany, and in World War II they used his ideas against France." Like Churchill, De Gaulle was also named prime minister.

  11. Both Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle are considered great military leaders during World War II. They both were devoted to their country in times of war. Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill had similarities growing up. Each of their fathers were considered war heroes and both men were poor students in the military academy. Winston was more privileged but had a unhappy childhood and they both during the time of war escaped enemy prison camps. These men had very similar backgrounds but were very different. Charles de Gaulle did not like the United States and wanted to be isolated while Winston like the United States. Winston was English and Charles de Gaulle was French is their biggest difference. Both men served as the prime ministers for their countries. Churchill served from 1940 to 1950 and served his second term from 1951 to 1955. De Gaulle served as the prime minister from 1944 to 1946 and created the French Fifth Republic in 1958. Both mean were highly respected and praised times of war but during times of peace they were less needed. Though they were different each man will be remembered for protecting their country in the war.

  12. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle had similar childhoods. They were both poor students and they were both involved in the military before becoming leader figures. However, as they grew older, there were more noticeable differences. Churchill was very close with the United States, whereas de Gaulle seemed more distant. His dislike for the United States is shown more after the war because he “reduc[ed] French involvement in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and made friendly gestures to Communist nations” (which made U.S. mad), and he also criticized the U.S. Another thing that differed between the two men was their levels of rebellion. Both of them, at some point, disagreed with those in power above them, but acted differently. “When Neville Chamberlain allowed Germany to take Czechoslovakia, Churchill was outraged.” However, he did not lash out and speak directly to the troops or people about this. On the other hand, when “Henri Pétain, who was in charge of the government, wanted to surrender,” de Gaulle was very angry because he didn’t think they should. Instead of keeping it to himself, he escaped and “made a defiant radio broadcast calling on the French to continue the fight against Germany.” He was found guilty because of his actions, but his continued broadcasts “inspire[d] the French people.” Both Churchill and de Gaulle are renowned leaders for their efforts and decisions during wartime, but after WWII, it was clear that their glory days were over.

  13. Charlie Dederich

In my opinion, Charles De Gaulle and Winston Churchill are two of the greatest military leaders of all time. They shared a very similar background throughout their childhood. Their fathers both fought in wars, which shaped their future military careers. Their fathers pushed them to pursue military during school and the years after. They were thought of as average to poor students, but they were known to truly thrive when it came to the battlefield. They were very strong and effective leaders, which is why they gained so many supporters and followers. They were both apart of politics, as they both were elected President at one point. Winston Churchill was elected to be the Prime Minister of Britain in the year of 1940 and held this position for a total of nine years. Charles De Gaulle invented something known as the French Fifth Republic during 1958 and became the president for ten years, ending his reign in 1969. During the time that both of these men had power, they were mainly needed in order to resolve military concerns. There were many military struggles for both of them while they were in office. Because they became so knowledgeable about the military and warfare, they were truly a necessity to have for the British and French during Hitler's dominant era. They were vital for Britain and France's survival. The one main difference between the two men was that Churchill had a strong, tight-knit relationship with allies like the Americans, while Charles seemed to isolate himself from his allies. He wouldn't reach out to his ally countries like America, while Churchill made a true effort to stay close and in touch with them. Charles wanted to deal with the freedom of France without having any other outside aid from an ally. Despite this difference, their core values were quite similar and they are both regarded as two true "game-changers" during this generation.

  14. Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle are very similar men in many respects. Both men we to military school, Winston Churchill attended Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Charles De Gaulle attended Saint Cyr Military Academy. Both men did very poorly in school. Both of these men were in the first world war and escaped from enemy prison camps. Both men got to power during war times and were very extreme for their governments sake. Charles De Gaulle though, did not trust the British and did not like the Americans at all. He only wanted to ally with the British and the Americans to insure the safety of the french people. Winston Churchill was a very inviting leader, he loved having allies across the pond and had no troubles allying with France. De Gaulle was very hostile to every other nation because he thought that France did not have allies it had interests. Both leaders were described as Wartime leaders by their cabinets. The were voted into office when their countries were at a point of near hopelessness and were immediately voted out after their views became too radical for their people during peace times. Winston Churchill however was able to keep a more intimate relationship with his people with his nightly broadcastings and his many speeches. On the other hand De Gaulle couldn’t do this as well because he was exiled to britain because all of France was captured. he was able to keep radio broadcasts going but his presence wasn’t as strong as churchills.

  15. Both Churchill and De Gaulle were great military leaders of there time, and they both dedicated themselves completely to their country. They had similar upbringings. Both of their fathers were considered war time heroes. Despite their fathers' legacies, they both were considered poor students in the military academies they attended. Later down the road, they both found themselves in war and escaped enemy prison camps. Because of their military experience, they were both elected into office. Interestingly enough, they were kicked out of office seemingly whenever times where peaceful, but when there were times of war they called them back. They were both eventually prime ministers of their country but also, by some, considered traitors because their ideas and actions were not universally agreed upon. On the other hand, they had differences such as their opinion on the United States. De Gaulle did not like the US and wanted to isolate them, while Churchill liked the US. Also, De Gaulle had considerably more power because he led even while in exile.

  16. Churchill and De Gualle shared a similar experience, especially because of the fact that they were both known for the same time frame in WWII, and their jobs were similar. They spent most of their life having involved with the military. The two were both involved in WWI and had to struggle to survive. Each man was super loyal to his country. The difference between the two was that Churchill was British and De Gualle was French, hence the airport name. Winston Churchill was a jolly and intelligent man who happily allied with France, US and other nations. Unlike Churchill, De Gualle was very nationalistic and only cared about France. He allied with the British for protection, but did not necessarily like the British. The people of Britain respecten Winston more than France did De Gualle. Both men were impeached because their ideas were not realistic to the people at the time.
De Gualle was exiled once France was captured, but he helped out his country by secretly broadcasting inspirational speeches.

  17. Both Churchill and De Gaulle came from families that had ties to the histories of their countries. The Duke of Malborough, who played an important part in the wars against Louis XIV, was an ancestor of Churchill's. Relatives of Charles de Gaulle fought in the Hundred Years' War and others were on the king's court. Churchill and de Gaulle both struggled with their academics in their early life and entered military academies. Both became soldiers and were captured by their enemies; Churchill escaped from South Africa, whereas De Gaulle tried five times to escape from a German war camp without success. Following the war, both men emphasized the efficiency and importance of the tank as a weapon and worked on military strategy. During World War II, both men had commanding roles in their armies. Churchill was in charge of the navy and De Gaulle was a field officer. Soon, both Churchill and De Gaulle were leading their countries as prime ministers. In 1945, both men left office. Churchill’s party had been voted out of office and De Gaulle retired due to his disgust with politics. However, they both lead their countries again in times of trouble, only to retire again.

  18. Charles De Gaulle and Winston Churchill both were part of extremely important and intellectual families. Charles De Gaulle’s father encouraged family debates and intellectual conversations. De Gaulle’s family tree can be traced all the way back to France in the early thirteenth century where his ancestor was a squire to King Phillipe Auguste. De Galle’s immediate family for the most part was historians. Similarly, Churchill was from an aristocratic family and was the grandson of the Arch Duke of Marlborough. In addition, both De Gaulle and Churchill did not excel academically. Further, both struggled with their initial careers in the military. Churchill had to take the military entrance exam three times before passing, and De Gaulle was described to be just an average soldier. De Gaulle was captured during battle at the Battle of Verdun with five unsuccessful escape attempts. Churchill was also a prisoner of war in South Africa, but he was able to escape from the prison camp, unlike De Gaulle. They shared a belief in the advancement in tank technology, urging their superiors to also support such advancements. During World War II, both men assumed leadership roles with Churchill as the head of the navy and De Gaulle as a field officer. Then, in World War II, both men were prime ministers of their respective countries, each retiring in 1945. Churchill retired because he was voted out of office while De Gaulle was disgusted with politics.

  19. Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill were prolific leaders during World War II. Charles de Gaulle was a the leader of the Free French Army, a small group dedicated to the resistance of German rule in France. Charles de Gaulle was an extremely patriotic man who showed his loyalty by sending radio broadcast across the English Channel to French people after he escaped to Britain. De Gaulle had little influence and lots of dedication. His determination eventually pulled through and brought him into the limelight. De Gaulle, initially an unknown military general, proved himself during World War II and helped to rescue France from German hands.

Winston Churchill was just as prolific a writer as De Gaulle. He penned many biographies and books and worked as a war correspondent during WWI. Churchill was interested in Britain’s status as a world power and he showed the world that he was capable to maintaining Britain’s leadership. He was staunchly against totalitarianism, like de Gaulle, a quality that would serve him well during WWII. Churchill often acted on impulse, angering his advisers, but he made the right decisions. Like de Gaulle, he was a romantic, sensitive and passionate.

Winston Churchill reluctantly entered the alliance with de Gaulle. He felt that de Gaulle was too patriotic. Churchill also felt that France had been lost to the Germans. His decision to ally with de Gaulle was partly to satisfy FDR and partly because de Gaulle had gusto. The alliance was tense, but it worked out well for de Gaulle. The longer the alliance went on, the more Britain and France tried to push de Gaulle away. In the end, the two countries were forced to recognize de Gaulle as a legitimate leader. Both Winston Churchill and de Gaulle were fierce, opinionated leaders. To get them to work together was a difficult task, but it somehow worked itself out.

  20. The families of Churchill and de Gaulle were very similar. Churchill’s father was the Duke of Marlborough and de Gaulle’s relatives had fought in the Hundred Years War, the Battle of Agincourt, the Franco-Prussian war, and served as king’s counselors or written histories. Both of their families were very involved in their country and country’s history. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle themselves had trouble with academics during their youth. De Gaulle entered the French military academy and Churchill got into Britain’s military academy after taking the entrance exam three times. Neither of these leaders were very accomplished when it came to their academics, and were judged to be average. After they graduated from their respective military academies, they both fought in World War I. Winston Churchill became notorious for escaping from a prison camp in South Africa during the Boer War, but Charles de Gaulle had five failed escape attempts from a German prison camp. Both Churchill and de Gaulle developed military strategies that either failed or were not adopted by their country. Before World War II began, both of these leaders gained their political support once more. Winston Churchill was made prime minister and minister of defense after Chamberlain resigned. Charles de Gaulle was made an able field commander. While France was occupied by the Nazis, de Gaulle sent inspirational radio broadcasts to the French people. Eventually, Churchill was forced to retire because of his health. Charles de Gaulle isolated France and retired after losing a vote of support.

  21. Winston Churchill and Charles De Gaulle were alike in many aspects besides both appearing as leaders of great world powers during World War II. Winston and Charles were indulged with pleasureful childhoods do to the respect and influence of their families in Britain and France. As teenagers, they enrolled in their respective military academies. Churchill failed his entrance exam two times before being permitted while De Gaulle struggled to receive high remarks in anything besides height. After graduation, both men became soldiers: De Gaulle a captain, and Churchill a soldier and journalist. Uncannily, the two were captured during the war and sent to enemy prisons where both tried to escape. However, only Churchill was successful. Following the end of the war, both struggled with political careers and managed to express what they had learned through writing. Later on, the men reestablished their jobs in government through heads of the military. Both showed extreme outrage at the actions of their governments during the war. Though De Gaulle’s road to leadership contained many more obstacles-primarily being sentenced to death- both De Gaulle and Churchill secured the role of prime minister of their respective country during World War II. At the end of the war, both men resigned from office only to later reappear, Churchill as prime minister of Britain in 1951 and De Gaulle as president of France in 1958. When their leadership roles finally came to an end, both men died shortly after in the mid 1960’s.

  22. Charles de Gaulle was a French general and statesman. He led the Free French Forces during World War II. Winston Churchill was a British politician who also became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Some of the similarities between de Gaulle and Churchill are that they were both very great and famous military leaders. Their early lives were similar. Both of them had fathers who were in war and were heroes. They both attended a military academy. Winston Churchill had an unhappy childhood even though he was privileged. De Gaulle was just an "average" student and wasn't seen as anything special. Later on in their lives, they were both held prisoners in war and escaped the prison camps. Churchill and de Gaulle were both elected into office, then were out voted. Both of their views did not fit into an exact category of political views which is why they ended up losing votes. In times of war, their country called on them because they were needed to help run the military. But in times of peace they were not needed, and they lost the office that they had. They both served as prime ministers to their countries multiple times, but were also known as traitors to their country. There are also a lot of differences between the two. Charles de Gaulle disliked the United States and wanted to keep them isolated, while Winston Churchill liked the US. One of the biggest differences is obviously that Charles Winston is English and de Gaulle is French. Charles de Gaulle was a leader even in exile and not for a specific country while Charles Winston was the official leader in war time. They both wrote military strategies but Charles de Gaulle wrote after the war had ended. There was a lot of similarities between the two men, but of course there was also differences. Regardless, they were both great military leaders and will be remembered for the rest of history.

  23. Churchill and de Gaulle both have family backgrounds that were very patriotic and involved in the national issues. Churchill’s family was one of the most powerful Duke families in Britain and de Gaulle’s father was a very passionate teacher who used to be a soldier fought against German troops. Both of them are not very interested in academics that both of them were not known as awesome students when they were young. They both went to military school. They both joined the army after they were graduated from school. Churchill had been to the military in India, South Africa, and Cuba as war correspondent and joined the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa, unluckily he was captured but he escaped alone later, which made him very famous in Britain. De Gaulle joined the WWI as a junior officer. During that time he learnt a lot of military knowledge and gained experience, he also became friend with Petain, who was his regimental commander but betrayed France in WWII. De Gaulle almost got killed and was captured in a battle in Belgium that he was awarded with the Cross. Both of them are very tough in terms of leading countries during war. They were both very talented at military theories. Churchill realized the importance the tanks and aircrafts in modern warfare, he also noticed Hitler’s ambition before the WWII, he warned the British government several times, but they didn’t understand. De Gaulle also claimed the importance of the mechanized troops in the modern war, but his theories were also not accepted by the French government. However they were both not very good at dealing with economies and internal affairs that after the war they were soon out of power. De Gaulle went back to power during the Algerian Rebellion, which was also a war time. Thus both of them were more like military heroes instead of excellent government leaders.

  24. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle had a very similar life in many ways. Both Charles De Gaulle and Winston Churchill had many relatives who had fought in many historic battles. When they were young they both went to a military academy and struggled in school. Once they graduated from the military academy they went to fight in battle. De Gaulle fought in World War 1 for the French while Churchill became a journalist and English soldier in Egypt. After World War 1 De Gaulle struggled as he was recovering from a life threatening injury. For much of the war he had been a German prisoner. He had many times tried to escape, but failed. On the other hand Churchill was able to escape prison while he was in the Boer War in South Africa. Churchill and Charles de Gaulle had a very similar view in politics too. Both thought that a war should be fought offensively. During the years after the war both politicians became less appealing as France and Britain were only looking for peace. Both Charles de Gaulle and Churchill were pushing the innovation of better tanks as they saw that this would come to their advantage if there ever was another war. The push for better fighting equipment made them become less popular and lose their primary positions. As World War two unfolded both Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill became very popular with the people. Their beliefs and personality were perfect for a country that was going through war as they made many speeches that expressed patriotism and power. When Britain declared war on Germany Churchill became the prime minister. As the war went on both, Charles De Gaulle and Churchill encouraged their people to keep on fighting and defending their homeland. When Charles de Gaulle came back to France he was elected as the Prime minister of France. Today they are still known as the some of the best leader of their country.

  25. Churchill’s ancestor was the duke of Marlborough, a war hero that fought against Louis XIV of France. De Gaulle’s ancestors fought in a different war or worked as king’s counselors. Both Churchill and de Gaulle had family that played important roles in the history of their countries. Neither Churchill nor de Gaulle were exceptional students while attending military academies. Charles de Gaulle was an average student and Churchill had to take an entrance exam for his school three times until he finally passed. Both Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle fought in wars after their graduation from military academy. They then were caught as prisoners of war and put in prison camps. Unlike Churchill, who was famous for escaping from a South African camp, de Gaulle attempted to escape from a German camp five times until he was finally put in solitary confinement. Both men strategized for the military and both had strategies that failed and their reputation was damaged. De Gaulle and Churchill both became prime ministers of their countries. De Gaulle ended up disliking politics while Churchill was not reelected. After a few years, both men became involved in the leading of their countries again. Then, both de Gaulle and Churchill retired and passed away.

  26. Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill both had families that had experience in fighting in wars. In military school, they both weren’t very good students. In WW1, de Gaulle fought in the Battle of Verdun and was injured and taken as a prisoner of war. He tried to escape 5 times unsuccessfully. Similarly, Churchill gained fame by successfully escaping a prison camp in South Africa. Churchill took charge of the Royal Navy but his plans failed and he was discredited. Until the 30’s, he suffered political isolation. De Gaulle on the other hand, after the war, wrote military strategies and his strategy was used by the French. His career suffered as well because he angered his superiors with his enthusiasm. As Hitler took to power, Churchill found his power increasing, as his views against Hitler were liked. De Gaulle, in WW2 took charge as a field commander and since he got mad at Pétain, he escaped to England and broadcasted to France to keep fighting. Under a military court he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Like Churchill, he became a leader and kept doing broadcasts to motivate the French.

  27. Allied victory on the European front can be mostly attributed to two great leaders, Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle. Churchill was the English prime minister of England at the height of the war and de Gaulle was the commander of the French army. They both had very similar upbringings. They were both brought up in a very patriotic and nationalistic manner and both attended military school. They were mediocre students but had set ways and certain ideas that would lead them to strive in leadership positions. Both de Gaulle and Churchill experienced the horrors of WW1, Churchill was the head of the British admiralty during the time of the sinking of the Lucitania and de Gaulle saw the powerful use of the tank on the battle field. Both leaders shared aggressive personalities necessary to stop the appeasement of Hitler and eventually stop the German conquest and end the war. They both knew that peace was unobtainable by negotiation with such an unreasonable man such as Hitler and used their skill in military strategy, patriotic spirit, aggressive attitude, and brute force to stop him. After the invasion of France de Gaulle fled to England where he sent out radio broadcasts to France encouraging those able to keep fighting. Churchill did the same for encouraging his troops and boosting their morale with ideas of nationalism and the idea that Hitler would destroy the life of freedom they all took for granted. Both leaders ended up pulling off allied victory in Europe affectively stopping Hitler in his tracks and without them our very lives today may have been changed.

  28. Compared to Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle was much more devoted to France than Britain. This is not surprising considering the fact that he fought for his nation in two world wars. He did a lot of speaking in Britain, but didn’t do nearly the amount of British action as Churchill, but did much more leadership for the exiled French government. De Gaulle was somewhat hostile when dealing with his allies and worked only to mainly free France after they signed the armistice with Germany. Just as Churchill made speeches to Britain, de Gaulle made overseas radio broadcasts to France to keep their spirits high. This was very successful to an extent.

Winston Churchill was much more of an inspiration to the people of Britain. He felt it was the responsibility of the world to eliminate Hitler and the tyranny spreading throughout the world. Not only was he a ruthless and a brilliant strategist, he also got the country prepared during the war even when England was bombed and seemingly hopeless. Churchill shared a lot of de Gaulle’s straits of being “headstrong”, stubborn, and determined.

Despite both having different focuses, both are considered to be great leaders and both made large impacts. Both Churchill and Gaulle graduated from military school and were better wartime leaders than in peacetime.

Another one of the key differences they had was their view on the United States. De Gaulle somewhat disliked the United States and wanted the country to remain an isolationist one while Churchill knew that they would extremely help with the war effort.

Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill. Both these men were famous military figures, and they were similar many other ways. Two of Gaulle’s relatives fought during the Hundred years’ war and one fought in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. In addition other relatives were involved with the king and other written histories of France. Gaulle was not a good student. He was considered average in everything. After school he immediately became a military leader In the Battle of Verdun, was wounded and then captured by the Germans. He attempted to escape five times but failed and after months he was finally released. After, he attempted to create strategic war plans though most were turned down. He proved himself an able field officer in WWII however the Germans still rolled over his army. Though throughout the war Gaulle became disgusted in politics, he was soon elected president in 1958. Here he was very successful in keeping the British government out of the Common Market, and creating order in Britain. After a decade he was forced to retire after loosing the vote of support. This was perhaps due his isolating France. Churchill similarly was bad in school and also joined the military directly after. Churchill also had a difficult time raising his name after multiple defeats and failed war plans. Then, when Britain declared war on Germany, Churchill became the leader of the new government. His first speech was very direct stating in short, that they would be victorious at all costs. Like Gaulle, Churchill began trying to gain allies such as the United States. Eventually he was voted out of office. As you can see both these men were very similar in their attitude, their drive to succeed, and even their weaknesses were similar. They were not very different except the fact that Gaulle was French and Churchill was British.

  30. Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaul had very similar upbringings and positions of power. They were both very powerful WWII wartime leaders, but their campaigns while in power were different. Both leaders were born to poorer families. They were both considered to not be very exceptional in school. After their schooling, they both went into military service. Churchill and De Gaul both did not rise immediately into power. They became their most influential when their countries were in their greatest time of need during WWII. They both inspired their people when their countries' futures seemed dim to fight back against the Nazis.

Churchill had a larger impact on the war as a whole though. When de Gaul came into French wartime politics, France had already been occupied by fascist Germany. De Gaul was only capable of making overseas radio broadcasts, which has an effect, but no direct influence on the war. Churchill was prime minister of Britain and he had much more influence over his country and could decide military action. He ensured that the British military and civilians fought hard to do their best against the Nazis.

After wartime though, both were somewhat lost. They proved themselves to be much more effective wartime leaders than in times of peace.
